Our fieldwork in Kenya has come to a close. If you have experienced problems using streets as a pedestrian anywhere in Kenya, we would still love to hear from you – especially if you have tried to challenge or change things using law or politics. Kuhusu Mradi wa Sehemu Jumuishi za Umma: Mradi huu wa utafiti unalenga kufanya uchunguzi kubaini shida ambazo zinasababishwa na miundo msingi isio jumuisha watu wote katika miji mikuu duniani. Nairobi na Momabasa ni mojawapo ya miji hii. Tungependa:

  • Kukagua njia ambazo zimetumika kujumuisha sheria zinazo wezesha utumizi mzuri wa barabara za mtaani
  • Kutambua jinsi gani serikali inahusika kutatua shida za mitaa barabara ambazo hazijumuishi wadau wote
  • Kuelewa mtazamo wako wa kibinafsi kuhusu mitaa hafifu iliyoko jijini Nairobi na Momabasa
  • Kuelewa bayana kuhusu sababu ambazo zimekuwezesha au kutokuwezesha kupiga ripoti kuhusu matumizi ya mitaa; na
  • Kuongea nawewe ili kupata maoni yako kuhusu njia mbadala na nzuri za kuwezesha utumizi mzuri wa mitaa

Ni nani ambaye tutahoji? Tungependa kuongea na watumizi wa bara wasio tumia magari ambao hupata shida wanapotumia kando ya bara hususan watu wa umri wa makamu, wazazi au wanaotoa huduma za uuguzi.

Our Fieldwork - English

The Inclusive Public Space project team is now recruiting participants in Nairobi and Mombasa. We want to hear about your experiences of inaccessible or difficult streets in these cities and the reasons why you have or haven’t reported or challenged problems. We also want to learn your thoughts on good practices and how accessibility can be improved. We are particularly keen to hear from people with disabilities, older adults and parents or caregivers. Anybody interested in participating does not need to live in Nairobi or Mombasa, they need only have had experiences with streets, sidewalks, etc.

What might limit access? 

  • Spaces that have to be shared with buses, bikes, cars 
  • Boda Boda, Matatu 
  • Hawkers and crowds 
  • Confusing or dangerous crosswalks 
  • Blockages  
  • Slip and trip hazards 
  • Spaces that have to be shared with vehicles 
  • Poor lighting, noise, fumes 
  • Lack of signage 
  • Road construction 
  • Missing pavements or sidewalks 
  • And, so much more! 

Who Do We Want To Interview? 

We want to talk with any pedestrians who find streets difficult to use, particularly disabled people, older adults, parents, or caregivers. If you would be happy to be interviewed by phone or online, please get in touch with us. As well as an interview, you will have the chance to get involved in the project in other ways. We will ask you to identify a street journey that you find difficult – and be given the option to accompany a videographer during filming or feature in the film if you wish – and to tell a story of how problem streets have affected your life. You do not need to leave your home to participate, as everything will be done by phone or online. There is the option to accompany the videographer during the street filming, but this is not required and will not affect participation.

We would like to keep in touch with you as we work on guides and tools and bring you together with other people interested in the subject to share experiences and ideas. Our aim is to draw on what you tell us to help make cities more inclusive.
